Old vs. New. It’s a cover war for ‘The Beautiful Forbidden’ by YA Fantasy author Kyra Dawson.
When I first wrote The Beautiful Forbidden I could clearly see what was on the front cover of the book. Then, when I went to create the book cover I couldn’t find what I was looking for and that threw a bit of a monkey wrench into my plans. But never one to be discouraged I persevered and put together something that while not exactly what I wanted would definitely work for the time being.

The first book cover incorporated my favorite colors, inky blue tones, a sense of dark mood and a bit of mystery, beautiful font and that’s about it. I thought it was gorgeous, and it looked really good both at the 256px by 400px size and as a thumbnail. I just really didn’t feel like it conveyed what the story was about. I began to think that instead of looking like a young adult dark fantasy, the story looked like it might be a romance novel. Which it isn’t. I mean it is, sort of, there is love in the story, but it definitely fits better into the dark fantasy genre than it does in the romance section.
I began to despair. Until I got some time on my hands to learn Daz 3D, there was no way I could replicate what I saw in my mind’s eye on the book cover. Sad face. 🙁
So what’s a girl to do? Well, I’m patient, and I also trust that the Universe will send me what I need. So I waited and just continued to write and publish chapters of The Beautiful Forbidden on Wattpad.

I found an image that almost captured exactly what I saw in my mind. The only difference was that it was gold instead of blue. This was the result.
It was pretty much exactly what I wanted except for the color. But the more I worked with it and looked at it, the more I thought it was just write. I mean, just right. The only thing I plan on doing is playing around with the text when I release it as one novel. The important thing for me right now is to get the work out. I figure I can fiddle with covers later.
So for now I thought I’d do a side by side comparison and get your thoughts. In a time honored battle of Old vs. New, which book cover for The Beautiful Forbidden do you like best? Do you think book cover 2 is better? Does it make you want to read this story? Does it better capture the dark fantasy theme than the first one does?
