Love Immortal A Short Story Written by Kyra Dawson

A beautiful soul can never be forgotten.

Dear Readers,

This short story is a very quick read. It is a piece of flash fiction for the Wattpad contest #HauntedRomance. Maybe one day I will lengthen it into a longer story; maybe a novella or even an entire book if there is a full story there, but for now here it is. Originally for the contest it was 998 words, but I made some minor tweaks when I posted it here, so the word count is a wee bit more. I’ve also included the Author’s Note that was with the original story. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if someday you would like to see more of Aerithine and Micah’s story. Happy reading.

AUTHOR’S NOTE LOVE IMMORTAL – 9 OCT 2016

Dear Readers,

Some things are forever.

This is a story about true and everlasting love.

Not many would believe it but I am a real romantic. The thought of soulmates and undying love, a love that stays evergreen and lasts throughout the ages, is something that touches my heart in ways that are profound.

So when I discovered this contest I jumped at the chance to write something that moved me.

I had so much fun writing this short story. I hope you love it as much as I do.

So wish me luck and vote for it. I can’t wait to read your comments.

“This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.” ~ Rumi

Love Immortal

“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day…unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.” ~ Unknown

Micah crouched upon the tor looking down into the vale that was nestled between the eyries. It was evergreen here, lush with flowers ever blooming. Even the night was full of light, the light of a billion stars shining for all the worlds and heavens to see. He wished it would storm icy sheets of rain, lashing him like so many barbed whips if only to soothe the scathing ache in his heart. She was leaving him, and it was tearing out his soul.

“Micah, this can do you no good.”

“What do you know, Xander? Have you ever loved another the way I have loved?” Micah’s words were harsh, churlish. No one could give him comfort.

“It is forbidden…” Xander began then stopped. “I know that there is nothing I can tell you that will ease your heart or sway you from your chosen path. So I will only say one thing.”

Xander was brother, mentor, and confidante to him; once, when Micah had been young and new, Xander had been his guardian. Micah knew the words came from a loving place, but today Micah did not want their comfort. When Xander didn’t continue Micah looked up at his closest friend.

“Go to her, Micah. It is the only thing that will give you solace.” Before Micah could say anything Xander had vanished.

Micah looked up at the darkness of the sky. The night was still fresh. He had time. Micah stood to his full 6’5” height and stretched his ashen grey wings. He breathed deeply of the cool night air, bolstering his heart for what must be done.

He flew over the vale, down past the craggy cliffs of the eyries and over the crystal clear stream that sang its sad song. Micah knew it sang for him tonight. He allowed the rush of pure air and wind to calm his mind and he let the rich depth of feeling he felt for her to envelope him.

   Aerithine.

One small word, yet it was everything to him. Aerithine. He had loved her for a thousand lifetimes, and he would love her for a thousand more. He flew to the one place he knew she would be; their place beneath the stars, a bower in the Grove of Ujjvalata, the Grove of Splendor.

He landed in the grove of white bark willow trees, beneath their blushing amethyst and pink leaves. It was Aerithine’s favorite place and so it had become his. He walked softly in the tall spring green grass watching the tiny sapphire blue fireflies sparkling and spinning dreams made of light around him.

   And then he saw her.

Her body was bathed in silver moon beams; the violet color of her long sleeveless gown looked almost black in the darkness. The dark cascade of her hair shone like obsidian and he knew her face would be tilted up towards the moon’s glow.

“I knew you’d come to me,” she said, her voice husky with barely suppressed emotion. “Micah,” she said his name on a whisper of breath that was a prayer to his ears.

“Aerithine, beloved,” he answered her. He went swiftly to her and gathered her into his arms, his mouth fastening upon hers with such a hunger he knew it could never be sated. As he kissed her he poured all his love and yearning and devotion for her into it. He wanted her to remember even though he knew she would forget. When he felt dampness upon his hands where he cradled her face he knew she felt it too.

When he looked down into her golden eyes her face was radiant and wet with tears.

“Don’t cry, my love, don’t cry,” he soothed. He embraced her tenderly, first with his arms then with his wings. He needed to feel her in his arms one last time, to feel her warmth and the strong beat of her heart. She needed his strength, his reassurance, his promise.

“I will miss you, Micah. Even without knowing why my heart aches with emptiness, I will miss you.” She touched his dark grey wings with a melancholy tenderness before placing gentle kisses on each one. “My Fallen Angel.”

“My Mortal Beloved.” He answered her.

She searched his face and he bestowed upon her a bittersweet smile.

“Do you regret falling from grace for loving a human?”

“Never,” he said. His violet eyes held hers, the intensity they held were mirrors of absolute truth. His voice was insistent, fervent. “You are the greatest love I will ever have, in this life, and for the eternity to come. Falling from grace was my fate…it brought me to you. To your heart.” He took her hand in his and placed it upon his chest, holding it there so she could feel the steady, strong beat of his own heart. “Your heart. Forever more.”

“Will you hold me, Micah? Hold me like you’ll never let me go.”

“For as long as we have left here together, I will hold you.”

They spent the night talking, laughing and kissing, watching the silent moon travel across the sky. They fell asleep entangled within each other’s arms.

As he slept he dreamed of her, laughing and happy, not here but in another place. Somewhere from the distance he heard a voice speaking to her.

“Aerithine, you are dead to your old life, but a mortal cannot stay in this ethereal realm. Birth to a new mortal life awaits you. Come, it is time.” With one last kiss and a sad smile she turned from him and followed the disembodied voice.

And in the morning when he woke, Aerithine was gone. The devastating pain brought him to his knees. How he wanted to forget, yet his vow to her held him steadfast.

He had promised to watch over her and to keep her safe. For always. Now all he must do is find her.
